Easter on the Island

Easter has come and gone now but it was a very important event for all Greeks and many return to their home villages. Hence the sleepy village was full of cars and fireworks. It was a wonderful experience for us to join the evening candlelit procession through the village from church to church on Good Friday (Megalo Paraskevi). On midnight on Saturday we joined our neighbours at the main church for the giant bonfire (as big as the church itself) with Judas atop and the fireworks. We were invited by a neighbour for the traditional Easter soup and lamb that ends Lent.

Well we've made ... and a fortnight into the adventure

Internet cafe, Vrysses.

We finally flew into Crete on Monday 26th March, followed by Rufus and Buffy later the next evening. None of us seemed to suffer any after effects of the ordeal though Rufus christened the indoors, the way only dogs can do. On the Tuesday we picked up the hire car and also met one of our neighbours, who has kindly helped us start to settle in to village life. Everyone in the village have been welcoming and only had kind words to say about the new house and the foreigners who have invaded their quiet little village. Mind you, few speak English, so our Greek is coming on a pace.... (only one other English couple in the village)

Life is so different from the rat race of England and we wake up to the sound of goats bells and birds. We look out from the bedroom onto the Lefka Ori with snow on the top (though it has been a mild winter). We pick up the post from the local kafenion and the tiny shop provides the daily bread.

Life has been an whirlwind pace as we discover where to pay outstanding bills for electricity and water and do battle in Hania to get a telephone line from OTE which has to be combined with socialising in the village.

Highlights so far? Wild asparagus in the garden, sheep 25 metres from the kitchen window, scorpions in the bath, the local yoghourt with honey, and meeting a couple of friends from university some forty years ago at an impromptu Cretan evening at the local taverna in the first week.

The only downside was the 10 days it took Pickfords to deliver Tigger and the furniture!

Greek driving has been challenging up have only driven on the wrong side of the rode once. Today I have bought a new car so I await the paper work.

As they say, so far so good. Eventually, we will stand to be able to relax and travel around! Next task is to get some gates for the front garden .... and maybe a television

Life is beautiful ....
